The theme this year for mutual is:

“O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day” (D&C 4:2).

LDS Mutual theme 2015

LDS Mutual theme 2015

We decided to use this theme for our New Beginnings.

We decided we would “Embark” upon a quest.  This quest would take us to the

“Island of Love (Heart)”

The Region of Might”

“The Wilderness of Mind”

and

“The Country of Strength”

We started in the Relief Society Room with opening exercises and then we used four classrooms; one for each of the “quests”.  The refreshments were set up in the Young Women’s room.

Each girl received a nautical bag with goodies (mints and information folder) and an “Embark” necklace:

As each quest was accomplished they received a reward:  A box of conversation hearts for the Island of Love (Heart), Lip Balm for the Region of Might, a sailor hat for the Wilderness of Mind, and an anchor charm for the Country of Strength.

The Young Women did a “Heart Attack”

First the book, “Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch” was read to the Young Women.

And then each girl planned who they would give “hearts” to:

Heart Attack on the Island of Love (Heart)

Region of Might

Some of the Mightiest Women are found in the Scriptures or in our church history.  We played a game of “Who Is It?”

Each girl gave clues as to their favorite Scripture or church history woman and everyone tried to guess who it was.

Women in the scriptures and church history are some of the best examples of a person (women) of might.

The ability to know is not always an easy thing.  Yet Joseph Smith stated:

“I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it, neither dared I do it;”

The Young Women watched a clip of the Joseph Smith First Vision and then wrote their testimony on paper.

For the movie clip we used the first 8 minutes of

Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration

Country of Strength

For the Country of Strength we used FOR THE STRENGTH OF YOUTH.  In preparation for one Mutual Activity before New Beginnings we had each Young Woman make her own Mormonad.  These were put up around the room along with Mormonads from the church.  Each YW class prepared either a commercial or news broadcast or music video or cheer that had to do with FOR THE STRENGTH OF YOUTH.

Young Women in Excellence  our preparations…

The theme for our Young Women in Excellence this year is , “It’s a Jungle Out There!”

Welcome Sign

Welcome Sign

It came to us after listening to the stories of what our Young Women deal with on a daily basis…especially at their  schools etc.

Big palm trees were fashioned from the inner cardboard tube of carpet rolls.  We crinkled wide strips of kraft paper and hot glued it on the tube for the palm tree trunk.  The leaves were constructed from wire hot glued down the center of cut out crepe paper leaves.  Extra wire was left on one end and bent and stuck in the top of the tube.  Stands were made from pressed board with 1 x 4’s cut and screwed on.  The 1 x4’s were cut into sections 2 feet long. One end of the 1 x4 was cut on an angle to allow the trees to stand at angles.

Young Women Mutual Activity Special Temple Night

Kansas City Missouri Temple at night

Young Women Mutual Activity Special Temple Night:

Do You Have My Name?

For our Mutual Activity we wanted to do something special that would bring special meaning as to why we go to the temple to do baptisms.  We wanted to make it feel real.  My counselor Drew was told of an activity in which the life stories of individuals were shared but they were still waiting in the hereafter for their baptism to be done.  These individuals wanted to be baptized but had not had the opportunity in their lifetimes.  They lived in the 1600’s or 1700’s or even the 1800’s. Some had their temple work done…but some did not…and were still waiting.   We found the script on the internet (sorry don’t remember where we found it..)

but our rewritten version can be found here Special Temple Nights
(.doc format) or here Special Temple Nights
(.pdf format) For our refreshments we served Angel food cake.  The activity was a success!

LDS Young Women Mutual Activity “Johnny Lingo” fulfills Personal Progress Value Individual Worth

Johnny Lingo-8 Cow

Mutual Activity

(Personal Progress Values)

Young Women

For a mutual activity we had a Johnny Lingo activity (and how to become 8 cow woman) and it was a hugh hit!  The activity was planned so each girl would be able to accomplish completing the value experiences found in the Personal Progress book under individual worth. First we watched the original Johnny Lingo movie (see below)**.     After watching the movie, each girl received a flower lei, a shell lei with a clip, a flower for their hair and sunglasses. She was also given a black folder with a chart stapled on the front, (the chart had the 8 stations on it) and a pencil decorated with cow spots on it. We had eight stations set up with activities that coordinated with the individual worth value experiences found in the Personal Progress book. At each station the girl could complete the activity, mark off her tracking chart with a “cow” sticker, attach a cow to the clip on her shell lei and get a “cow candy”.  I have included links to everything so it can be downloaded and used!

**Johnny Lingo is a short film produced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was based on a story by Patricia McGerr inWoman’s Day.[1] At about half hour in length, it does not mention the LDS Church, but illuminates many of its teachings, such as kindness toward others and self-worth, and takes digs at measuring oneself against material things.
In the story, Johnny Lingo (played by Makee K. Blaisdell) is a shrewd, but honest and well-liked Polynesian trader. It is actually told from the perspective of a Caucasian shopkeeper, Mr. Harris (played by Francis Urry). Lingo has come to one island to bargain for a wife. Mahana (played by Naomi Kahoilua), the young woman he desires, is considered by her neighbors and even her father to be of little value, sullen, ugly and undesirable. As the bargaining is about to begin, women of the island brag to each other of how many cows their husbands had given for each of them, and comment that Mahana’s father will be lucky to see one cow as Lingo’s offer. The counselor advises Mahana’s father to ask for three cows so that finally, Moki (Mahana’s father, played by Joseph Ah Quin) will at least get one cow.
The bargaining begins and as the counselor suggested Moki asked Johnny Lingo three cows. Islanders laugh derisively, then wait for Lingo to make his counter-offer, certain that he will make a devastating bargain.
Lingo, considering, says that three cows are many… “But not enough for my Mahana!” He then offers the unheard-of price of eight cows for her hand in marriage. The next day, the villagers gather at the house of Mahana’s father to see the completion of the deal. Some of the islanders say that Lingo reconsidered his deal and would not show up. But Lingo brings the cows and subsequently marries Mahana that night, enduring some derision for a deal that many believe to be foolish, while Moki revels in his newfound prosperity. He and Mahana then leave the island on a trading trip.

When they come back, Harris discovers, to his astonishment, that Mahana is a beautiful, happy woman. Even Mahana’s father began accusing Johnny Lingo of cheating him by giving only eight cows for a girl truly worth ten cows. Johnny, her proud husband, had proved to her that her true worth had nothing to do with what others saw, but only what she truly was.

He had made the best bargain of all — a few cows for a life with the woman that he loved.
