Boston Marathon 2013

June 18, 2013 by shelley

As always, this past April we were tuned into the Boston Marathon.

During all the years we lived in Boston we enjoyed being spectators and dreamed of some day qualifying and running the Grand Daddy of all Marathons-Boston. We enjoyed the tradition, the vibrance and the absolute “electricity” in Boston on Patriots Day, including the annual running of the Boston Marathon.   However, three babies during the six years we lived there prevented my personal participation in running the event.

So it was with great delight to return years later and watch my daughters both run (and finish) the Boston Marathon.  Both ran as fully qualified runners.  Jennifer ran the Marathon in 2006 and Becca ran it in 2009.  Both ran the race spectacularly.  Returning to Boston was a celebration.  We re-connected with old friends and the entire Patriot’s day was wonderful and quite the event.

The tragedy this year touched us deeply and we felt very connected since the very spot where we stood to watch both Jen and Becca run would  be the exact spot of one of the two bomb explosions in 2013.  Same place different year.  Since thousands, probably millions of spectators have viewed the marathon over the years, we like so many others felt connected to those that suffered in this tragedy.

Pictures of both my daughters respective years running the Boston Marathon:

Christmas 2012

Christmas 2012.

The calm before the storm:DSCN0040

DSCN0041DSCN0039We knew it would be celebrated in two parts, one part would be early when Becca and Henry would open the presents Santa brought.  The Longs  would then head out to Grandma and Grandpa Long’s  household in Olathe and they would celebrate again.   The rest of us decided to wait for B.J., Jenn and Jack to arrive to really celebrate.  We were still hoping they would arrive in time for Christmas.  We would pick them up from the airport once they arrived, wait for the Longs to return and then we would have Part II Christmas.

Beatty Christmas Part I.

Becca and Henry got up very early, checked their stockings, checked to see if Santa ate his cookies and checked to see if the reindeer ate their food…

Finally late in the afternoon we were able to celebrate Beatty Christmas Part II.  B.J., Jenn and Jack had traveled for more than 30 hours, slept in an airport, switched planes two times, and four airports later they finally arrived!

More people start arriving for Christmas…

February 16, 2013 by shelley

Becca and Carl came in on Christmas Eve and we were so excited.  They flew all the way from Sweden via Moscow.  We took Bear to the airport to meet them and he was one very excited little dog (he had been staying with us in Kansas City since Thanksgiving and he was with Jen and Adam before that for a few a weeks.) But everyone else was so excited too.  Bec and Bec did an “I am so excited” dance…

B.J. and Jenn were suppose to arrive Christmas Eve also, but they ended up traveling for over 30 areas through several airports trying to get to Kansas City after their flight was cancelled….a very long trip for them.

For the first time since we have been married, nearly 35 years, Bob and I did not have our Thanksgiving dinner in our home.  B.J. and Jenn were heading to Los Angeles, Becca and Carl are in Sweden, so Bob and I agreed to travel to North Caroline.  It would be two people traveling, Bob and I, vs. five people traveling; Jen, Adam, Becca, Henry and Caroline.  We enjoyed a beautiful traditional Thanksgiving at Jen and Adam’s home.
