Carl camped out for the weekend. The campout is a tradition at Duke. Graduate students campout in hopes of winning a lottery allowing them to purchase season tickets for the upcoming Duke basketball season. Students organize themselves into groups, to increase their odds, and then split the season ticket between the survivors of their group. Duke limits the size of vehicle you can bring in, no recreational homes, so many students use the “u-haul” style vehicle, to have some sort of shelter for the weekend. Tents are in abundance. Randomly, a siren signals a check in point in time, 24 hours a day. From Friday night to Sunday morning until the drawing the student (with ID) can only miss one check-in. Fortunately, Carl did win, so even though is was a cool rainy weekend he can now can attend some of the home basketball games. We decided to “help” him out by delivering pizzas to him. Plus, since he had to be within hearing range of the siren and had to immediately check in, this was my only chance to see him.
