New Beginnings Peace in Christ

New Beginnings Peace in Christ 2018

Young Women New Beginnings “Peace in Christ”

We used this year’s Mutual theme D & C 19:23 “Peace In Christ” for our New Beginnings theme.  Where can we turn for peace, where do we go to find Christ?  For some it is in prayer, for others they turn to the scriptures.  Other people seek solace by going to a special quiet place, like a garden.  Gardens have played a special role in the history of mankind.  The Garden of Eden was man’s first home given to him from God.  It is also where the fall occurred.  Interestingly enough, Christ’s atonement also took place in a garden, the Garden of Gethsemane.  So two of the greatest events in the history of mankind took place in a garden.  Another great event took place in a grove of trees, when Joseph Smith prayed to seek the answers he sought.  The Sacred Grove is a garden of trees.

Gardens have been where some of the most spiritual events in our history have occurred.  So we decided to use the garden theme for our NEW BEGINNINGS theme this year.

PROGRAM

Our program included a special musical number: “Peace in Christ” sung by the Young Women.  Opening song was Primary Song, “When I Am Baptized” and closing song Hymn, “Where Can I Turn For Peace?”

Four of the Young Women gave a “quiz” about the Young Women’s Program and Personal Progress and then went through the answers with everyone.  We used the quiz idea from the website: The Red Headed Hostess.  Three of the Young Women gave talks  “Where Can I Turn For Peace.”

At the end of the program each girl received a white rose, necklace and pens with the mutual theme. (Necklaces were from the Etsy shop templesquares and the pens with mutual theme were from LatterDayPrintables.)

“ASK”

New Beginnings “Ask”

For our New Beginnings we decided to use this year’s Mutual Theme.  The logo and other resources provided by the church started us thinking…

The balloon quote with ask in it made us think of the artist Roy Lichtenstein and his art that has a comic book feel to it and he often uses balloon quotes

Roy Lichtenstein art

We took pictures of all the Young Women and using an app converted their pictures to a more “cartoon look”.  They all wrote down questions.  These were used in decorating the walls.  We also used the question mark (?) and the building silhouette throughout the decor.

The Program

We viewed the “Ask of God” Mutual theme video

We had a remarkable speaker, Evy Tanner a Laurel in our Stake.  We asked her to speak on “Asking” our Heavenly Father and to tell of her personal experiences…She spoke of how when she was four she prayed to be turned into a chicken but was thankful that prayer was answered.  She also shared how her family experienced a miracle this past June when their prayers (and thousands of others) were answered when her father was rescued after being lost at sea off of Honduras (see Fox news).

Evy delivered a powerful talk.

Kansas City First Ward New Beginnings 2016

“Press Forward With a Steadfastness in Christ”

We used this years Mutual theme for our New Beginnings “Press Forward With a Steadfastness in Christ”.  When one try to think of a good example of pressing forward with a steadfastness in Christ the handcart pioneers comes to mind and the artwork of Sandra Rast’s piece called “Press Forward” is perfect, (a special thank you to Sandra Rast for letting us use her image of the handcart pioneers).

Each Young Women told of one of the handcart pioneers from the Willie/Martin Handcart Company and then shared how they found inspiration to Press Forward with Steadfastness in Christ.

Our invitation was done on a slab of wood sent in a small burlap sack using vintage stamps depicting pioneers:

Mormon Breakout Room…Mutual activity…AWESOME!!

November 15, 2015 by shelley

LDS MUTUAL ACTIVITY

“Mormon Themed” Breakout or Escape Room…a great

Mutual Activity!

FUN! FUN! FUN!

If you would like to do our Mormon themed breakout room for your Mutual Activity…NOW YOU CAN!!!

We have received lots of interest in the Mormon themed breakout room and worked diligently for more groups to enjoy the escape room in a reasonable and affordable way.

If you would like to rent the escape room or construct your own Mormon themed breakout room for your Mutual Activity visit www.mormonbreakout.com.  Inquiries can be sent to qbennion@gmail.com.

Flyer advertising Breakout Room (Escape Room) for Mutual Activity

Breakout Rooms (or Escape Rooms) are an increasingly popular entertainment springing up all around the country. (BreakoutKC is very popular locally)  They are a type of physical adventure game in which people are locked in a room with other participants and have to use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles, find clues, and escape the room within a set time limit. Some games include sub-plots. The games are based on “escape the room” video games in which the player is locked inside a room and must explore their surroundings in order to escape. Players must be observant and use their critical thinking skills to escape the room. Other inspirations include adventure board games and movies.

Soooooo for a fun combined Mutual activity we decided to create a “Mormon theme” breakout room.  Using clues from scripture, church history, Mormon culture and even the Young Women’s values and personal progress book, we made up clues, set up locks and created a “missionary apartment” from which they had to breakout!

Sign on door of breakout room

Sign on door of breakout room…awesome MUTUAL ACTIVITY

The young men and young women were divided into 3 groups (we set up three identical breakout rooms).  They were told the rules of the game and lead into their respective room and “locked” into the room with all the clues needed to open the lock on the door.  They were given one hour to “breakout”.  We even had an iPad in each room linked to a computer in the “control room” in the event if the group got totally stuck or got totally off base.  Then, if needed a clue would appear on their iPad screen (we have had to give “clues” to keep each group on track).  In the control room we could watch and listen to each group, but they could not see or hear us in the control room.   With varying degrees of help all groups finally were able to breakout.   After breaking out,  using one last key found in the “missionaries apartment” they could open the lock on the chest holding their refreshments.  Everyone enjoyed the activity!

And then due to popular demand, (on a p-day) we set the rooms up again..and again…and again… and had the missionaries in our district try to “breakout” of the missionary apartment.  Again the activity was enjoyed with gusto.

Our plans are to share the Mutual activity with other wards and allow our youth to be involved on the “proctoring” end of the activity.

For our Standards Night we wanted to test the standards as found in the pamphlet “For The Strength of Youth.”  We put Miss Molly Mormon Standards on trial (script: Molly Mormon Standards on Trial).  She was tried in the Court of Kansas City First Ward Judicial District in the State of Cool with the Honorable Judge Bishop presiding.  Miss Standards was charged with one count of deference to modesty and a second count of intolerance to trend with popular culture. The prosecutor Ms Cool brought three witnesses to the stand to testify against Miss Molly Mormon Standards.  The Witnesses included: Prom Queen, Candy Samples and Ava Tar.  The defender, Ms P. Progress (the P. stood for Personal) also had three witnesses.  They were Miss Humility Anne Modesty, Miss Integrity Virtue (Ivy for short) Wisdom and Miss Divine Nature.

Invitations to the Young Women and their parents was an official looking “Supoena”.

The achievement/activity Primary girls were our jury so they received an invitation via a summons for “Jury Duty”.
