The Kansas City Symphony kicked off another great year with  a rousing rendition of the  Star Spangled Banner! I loved it!!

And apparently I was not alone…from the Kansas City Star:

“Last weekend, the orchestra began its fifth season in the Kauffman Center’s Helzberg Hall, kicking off its action-packed year with another “Star-Spangled Banner” and vigorous helpings of European concert music, including Maurice Ravel’s mesmerizing Bolero.

The Symphony has been filling the hall with regularity. Its main classical series, pops concerts, family shows and series of happy-hour events aimed at attracting new listeners have contributed to unprecedented levels of ticket sales and revenue. A recent disc release — its sixth CD project for the audiophile Reference Recordings label — featured the music of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. Significantly, the record also showed off the talents of Jan Kraybill, caretaker of the Kauffman Center’s huge Casavant organ, and two Symphony principals, violinist Noah Geller and cellist Mark Gibbs.

Geller and Gibbs also played major roles in last weekend’s season opener. The program’s focus on featured soloists from the Symphony’s top ranks represented an important reminder that this band is rich in individual talent even as it swoons and swells like a unified force under Stern’s direction.”

Looking forward to another great season with the Kansas City Symphony!

Hallelujah…we attend Handel’s Messiah at the Kansas City Symphony

January 27, 2014 by shelley

I love the Messiah and this year we attended Handel’s Messiah performed by the Kansas City Symphony.  The Independence Messiah Choir, along with the Symphony Chorus and the Kansas City Symphony made the perfect kickoff to the holiday season.

David Lockington (conductor), Joélle Harvey (soprano), Ryan Belongie (countertenor), Ross Hauck (tenor), Kevin Deas (bass), Kansas City Symphony Chorus, Charles Bruffy (chorus director), Independence Messiah Choir

The performance was superb.  My only hitch being I am a traditionalist.  And even though the performance was brilliant, I  prefer to have the alto part sung by an alto (not a countertenor as in this performance).  The solo “a virgin shall conceive” makes more sense (to me) when sung by an alto.  But I did not let it mar my enjoyment of the music and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Kansas City Ballet Fall Performance Carmina Burana

February 15, 2013 by shelley

I simply had to go to the performance of the Kansas City Ballet of Carmina Burana.  This was Caitlin’s last performance…since she is expecting twins in March.  We have been friends with her, a ballerina for the Kansas City Ballet,  for about 10 years now…couldn’t miss this performance.

Kansas City Ballet Performs World Premiere of Tom Sawyer at the new Kauffman Center of Performing Arts

October 25, 2011 by shelley

The newly completed Todd Bolender Center for Dance and Creativity at Union Station, is the new home of the Kansas City Ballet.

The Kansas City Ballet recently performed the World Premiere of Tom Sawyer at the new Kauffman Center of Performing Arts.  The KC Ballet performed in the  Muriel Kauffman Theater.  The ballet prepared and rehearsed for the performance in the new Todd Bolender Center for Dance and Creativity at Union Station.  It was recently transformed from an abandoned coal-fired power power plant to a new, beautiful home for the Kansas City Ballet.

We attended the Saturday night performance of Tom Sawyer, and found it delightful! It is appropriate the ballet would pay homage to Missouri born, Mark Twain and his character, Tom Sawyer in its premier performance in the new Muriel Kauffman Theatre.  What a beautiful way to honor the new performing arts center by honoring a native Missourian.  It was a historic moment.

Hats off to the Kansas City Ballet and the new Muriel Kauffman Theater at the Kaufman Center of Performing Arts.
