Independence, Missouri Mormon Visitor’s Center decorating for Christmas

Once again, I had the privilege of helping to decorate the Independence, Missouri Latter-day Saint (Mormon) Visitor’s Center for Christmas.  I help Sue Allred with the decorating of the two trees (one big one upstairs and the pioneer tree downstairs).  We have been doing it for about 15 years or so now.  We just finished the trees on Friday.  They will have the lighting ceremony Saturday Nov. 30th at 6:00 pm (937 W. Walnut, Independence, MO).

The big tree on the main level is a 12 footer and has the Savior and the celestial heavens as a back drop.

We choose colors that complement the back drop using gold, blues, pinks and lime greens.  This year we used the theme of “Let Heaven and Nature Sing”.

The downstairs area has to do with the history of the area so we decorate the tree to fit with the historic pioneer theme.

Independence L.D.S. (Mormon) Visitor’s Center-Decorating for Christmas!

February 15, 2013 by shelley

Sue Allred and I were again again asked (what is it? maybe about the 15th year now??) to decorate the Christmas trees at the L.D.S. (Mormon) Visitor’s Center.  Unfortunately, most my pictures have been lost on the lost memory card.  I only have a couple I snapped on my cell phone:

Kansas City Missouri Temple to be dedicated May 6th, 2012

January 21, 2012 by shelley

The Kansas City Missouri Temple will be dedicated May 6, 2012!  This is the first LDS Temple to be completed in the area.   The history of the LDS church in the area is quite a story.  In the 1830’s there were the “Mormon Wars”.  The early LDS were first driven out of Independence, Missouri (1832)  under harsh conditions and then later from Far West in Caldwell County Missouri during the winter of 1838-39 under extremely terrible conditions.  The Prophet Joseph Smith was imprisoned in jail in Liberty, Missouri not far from the new temple site.  Two temples were announced in the early days of the church; one in Independence, Missouri and one in Far West, Missouri (pictures of current Far West, Missouri).  They were never built.  The Kansas City Star newspaper has an article today about the dedication of the new temple.
