Birthday!!

June 18, 2013 by shelley

I have in the past, tended to ignore my birthday.  But because of my “August event 2010” I know look at each new birthday in a different light.  I am glad to have them.  It is certainly better than the alternative.  My good, good friend Dr. Ann Romaker helped me celebrate this one.  We attended Time Out For Women here in Overland Park with a group of friends and she arranged for a group of friends to all go out to dinner and then have dessert at her house in celebration of my birthday.  Thank you Ann!!

We were entertained/enlightened by the likes of Hilary Weeks, Chris Williams, Merrilee Boyack, Michael Wilcox, Richie Norton, Laurel Christensen, Jenny Oaks Baker, Terryl & Fiona Givens and Sherrie Dew.

Then we enjoyed a delightful dinner with friends; Watkins, Ibas, Yanos, Speakmans and Thomas’ at the Grand Street Cafe in Kansas City, Missouri near the Plaza.

Then it was on to Ann’s house for desserts…and oh the beautiful desserts.

Chocolate, chocolate and...

Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Eve preparations…

February 16, 2013 by shelley

Christmas Eve dinner was a little more low key this year.  Since there were people with colds we used paper plates and throw away utensils to try and prevent the spread of germs.  B.J. and Jenn were still trying to get to Kansas City but were keeping us updated on their progress.   Miriam delayed her arrival, but Andrea and her children came to enjoy our traditional steak and shrimp Christmas Eve dinner.

Our Easter dinner traditions include carrot cake cooked in clay flower pots, decorated with coconut green “grass”, real flowers, bunny peeps, gummy worms and jelly beans:

Our traditional Easter dessert, flower pot filled with carrot cake decorated with green coconut grass, flowers, bunny peep and a gummy worm.

Another tradition is our chick cupcakes (made with lemon flavored cupcakes and frosting, a vanilla wafer for the chick’s head, orange slices cut in half for wings, peach gummy rings cut up for the beak, a little orange frosting and sprinkles and a dot of black icing for the eyes:

Cute chick cupcake for Easter.

Chick, chick here, chick, chick there..here a chick, there a chick, everywhere a chick chick.

Today was the first day we have eaten out at a restaurant this holiday. We headed down to the plaza to the Cheesecake Factory, one of our favorites, and also to see the plaza lights! The Kansas City Plaza Lights are one of this country’s most spectacular Christmas lights and one of Kansas City’s most favorite traditions and is the official kick off of the holiday season. The famous ceremony, which began as 16 lights hung over a doorway, now includes over 80 miles of lights with 280,000 multi-colored bulbs outlining and illuminating the buildings and tower of the Country Club Plaza. The first official Plaza Lighting ceremony began in 1930, and now draws thousands to the Country Club Plaza on Thanksgiving night.

Dinner at the Cheesecake Factory

It has become a small family tradition, when Grandma and/or Grandpa visit the Longs we head to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner. Dinner is followed by chocolates from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. It is then a must to throw coins in the “water” before heading home. Becca and Henry can eat a whole Chicken Lemon Piccata between them and then they eat some of grandma’s. The big surprise this time was how much Henry liked the Vietnamese Shrimp Rolls complete with the dipping sauce. A rather sophisticated taste for a one day short of two-year old.
