Independence L.D.S. (Mormon) Visitor’s Center-Decorating for Christmas!

February 15, 2013 by shelley

Sue Allred and I were again again asked (what is it? maybe about the 15th year now??) to decorate the Christmas trees at the L.D.S. (Mormon) Visitor’s Center.  Unfortunately, most my pictures have been lost on the lost memory card.  I only have a couple I snapped on my cell phone:

Getting our Christmas Tree the day after Thanksgiving.

November 25, 2011 by shelley

The day after Thanksgiving we get our Christmas tree. We go to a Christmas tree farm and find the perfect tree. We have gone through a few Christmas tree farms as suburban sprawl has put several out of business; Tomahawk Pines, Warren Christmas Tree Farm, just to mention two we used to go to. We have found one on Quivera called Bierman’s. Around here the long needle pines grow best. But some years ago, I decided that I liked the Frasier Fir the best for our tree (the needles don’t dry and become long hypodermic pine needles), plus they smell “Christmasy”. Frasier firs don’t grow around here, but the farms import them, so we can get our fir tree at the farm, tromp up and down among rows and rows of trees. We get to do the train ride, pick out our tree, drink hot chocolate and eat cookies and feel like we have had the “farm” experience. So much better than getting the tree on a corner lot.

Decorating the Christmas Tree at the Latter-Day Saint Visitor’s Center in Independence Missouri!

November 25, 2011 by shelley

I got back from visiting B.J. and Jenn and their new little son, Jack just in time to decorate the LDS Visitor’s Center in Independence. I have been helping do this for more than 15 years. We always do it, a week before Thanksgiving. We, Susan Allred and I, decorate the large tree on the main level and then decorate the “Pioneer” Christmas tree downstairs in the historical section. It is something I enjoy doing and it makes me feel a part of the church history in this area. My ancestors were kicked out of Jackson Co., Missouri, and then a few years later out of Missouri altogether in the 1830’s and now I am decorating the Christmas tree at the Visitor’s Center on the temple lot in Jackson County, Missouri.
