One of my favorite classes this year was a class that presented the top ten items in the Church History Museum.  An article appeared in the Deseret News about it.

The Church History Library, located at Church headquarters in downtown Salt Lake City, is a special place, said the library’s director Keith A. Erekson. The library houses a quarter of a million books and magazines as well as manuscripts, thousands of audio visual materials, two million photographs and many other artifacts that document the history of the Church in the latter days.

The Church goes to great lengths to preserve these treasures. The library retains secure storage vaults and is built to the highest seismic standards. It is climate controlled to reduce fluctuations in temperature for items that are temperature sensitive. It is also secured with cameras and sensors and lasers and “everything we need to keep the records safe,” Brother Erekson explained.

But amid the library’s trove of historical objects and documents are some extra special items. During a session of BYU Campus Education Week, Brother Erekson shared what he considers to be the “Top 10 Treasures of the Church History Library.”

BYU Education Week 2015

BYU Education Week 2015

The theme of the 2015 Campus Education Week, August 17–21, 2015, is “Lay Hold upon the Hope Set before Us: Which Hope We Have as an Anchor of the Soul” from Hebrews 6:18-19.

According to the class program, “In these trying times, it brings great comfort to anchor ourselves to Christ and feel the hope that His Atonement provides. President Boyd K. Packer taught, ‘As we move into the future with quiet confidence, His Spirit will be with us. There is no end to His power to bless and direct the lives of those who seek truth and righteousness’ (“The Reason for Our Hope,” October 2014 general conference).”

BYU Campus Education Week, which first began in 1922, is now one of the largest continuing education programs of its type offering more than 1,000 classes on education, religion, marriage and family, the arts, history, genealogy, communication, and much more. Classes are designed primarily for adults, although anyone age 14 and older is welcome to attend. The more than 200 presenters are faculty from Brigham Young University, instructors from Seminaries and Institutes of Religion, and other experts in their fields.

I had to go check the progress on the Provo City Center Temple.

The Provo City Center Temple is a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) under construction on the same site as the former Provo Tabernacle in Provo, Utah. The temple utilizes much of the external shell of the tabernacle, which was damaged in a fire in 2010.

My favorite Mount Timpanogos (sometimes informally referred to as Timp, is the second highest mountain in Utah‘s Wasatch Range.) could hardly be seen due to all the smoke in the air from the California forest fires.

Education Week at Brigham Young University 2013

September 3, 2013 by shelley

As we have done every year for about 30 years now, Bob and I attended BYU Education Week.  The BYU campus, with Mt. Timpanogos as its backdrop, is breathtakingly beautiful.BYU Campus with Mt. Timpanogos as its backdrop

Campus Education Week began in 1922 and is believed to be the largest continuing education program of its type. For one week each August, the program utilizes the campus of Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah) to present more than 1,000 classes on education, religion, marriage, family relations, health, history, genealogy, science, youth interests, and many other areas. The program is designed primarily for adults, although anyone age 14 and over may attend.

The theme this year was “A People of Profound Learning.”

“But gaining knowledge is one thing, and applying it [is] quite another. Wisdom is the right application of knowledge, and true education—the education for which the Church stands—is the application of knowledge to the development of a noble and Godlike character.”

— David O. McKay
