And More Snow! February 26th, 2013 Fairway, Kansas

February 27, 2013 by shelley

Snow on every branch led to many branches and limbs breaking in the neighborhood.

The last snow storm was an “event” so what do you call it’s encore just 5 days later?  In Kansas and Missouri (Missouri was declared a disaster area) we were again pummeled with about 10 inches snow.  This one was harder to measure since Bob started shoveling at 4:30 in the morning, shoveled again before noon and then shoveled for the third time when it seemed be almost done snowing.  It did snow another 1-2 inches overnight.  This time the snow was very wet and stuck to everything like a thick frosting.

During the storm; we shoveled three times.  The snow was a very dense, wet and heavy snow.DSCN0507 DSCN0503 DSCN0513 DSCN0516 DSCN0519 DSCN0520After the storm I tried to get a few pictures to capture how much snow we really had on the ground…DSCN0525 DSCN0529 DSCN0534 DSCN0538 DSCN0541 DSCN0542 DSCN0545 DSCN0547 DSCN0552 DSCN0553Behind our house a tree was uprooted, toppled over taking a power pole with it.   It caused Mission Road to be closed and  and knocked out power out for hundreds of homes in Fairway.  We were lucky, this time, we did not lose our power. (Usually, it is just the opposite, we are first to lose power and last to be restored.) We did hear the transformer “blow” when we were out shoveling.

Fairway had a contest for most creative snow fort.  Here are a few creations around Fairway:

This was our neighbor, it was right across the street.

Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Eve preparations…

February 16, 2013 by shelley

Christmas Eve dinner was a little more low key this year.  Since there were people with colds we used paper plates and throw away utensils to try and prevent the spread of germs.  B.J. and Jenn were still trying to get to Kansas City but were keeping us updated on their progress.   Miriam delayed her arrival, but Andrea and her children came to enjoy our traditional steak and shrimp Christmas Eve dinner.

Lightening Strike!

July 14, 2012 by shelley

I remember while Jen was visiting one night there was a terrible lightening and thunder storm. The storm awakened me from a deep sleep and one thunderclap was particularly loud and shook the house. I remember thinking, “My goodness, that was close.” Little did I know how close! A tree in my neighbor’s yard was struck and its branch flipped over and hit the side of our house, missing power lines, our fence, and our windows….just leaving a black streak down the side of our house. I walked around the house for days straightening pictures on the wall that had been shaken askance. But it wasn’t until I sat down at our computers that I realized the real damage. First I noticed my keyboard on my big Mac was no longer working…nor the mouse. I also found numerous programs no longer working and data had been affected–missing, since hard drives were no longer working. It has taken weeks to try and get the computers running normal again. The lightening strike a little too close for comfort!!

Fun in the sun and a visit to the Cheesecake Factory!

June 6, 2012 by shelley

Becca and Henry love the “Cheese Factory”.  Their favorite dish is the Lemon Chicken Piccata.  They split an adult dinner size portion and eat it all! None of that children’s menu for them….

And then a little fun in the sun with friends Jon and Caitlin Mack. (Caitlin is a ballerina for the Kansas City Ballet.)

And finally, just some good old fashioned “couch time,” relaxing with Grandma and Grandpa….
