A rare supermoon lunar eclipse took place on Sept. 27, when both a supermoon and a lunar eclipse happened at the same time. This was the first time that a supermoon lunar eclipse had happened since 1982.  Of course Bob and I had to watch it in the night sky.  We joined several neighbors and watched the rare event. I snapped a picture but knew I did not have the right camera equipment to capture the magnificent sight.

Yes to Vincent Van Gogh at Artsy!

I love Vincent Van Gogh!  Who doesn’t?  So when I was recently contact by Diana from a website called ARTSY and asked if I would give a shout out to their webpage on Vincent Van Gogh (they had seen my blog on my visit to the VMFA “Virginia Museum of Fine Art”) it was a no brainer…”YES!”  Go to Vincent Van Gogh!

VMFA Exhibit "Van Gogh, Manet, and Matisse: The Art of the Flower"

Here’s ARTSY’s link to Van  Gogh.

First a little about Artsy.  Artsy’s mission is to make all the world’s art accessible to anyone with an Internet connection.  (You have to do a simple registration…but this is all at NO COST!)  ARTSY is an art discovery platform whose mobile apps and website are frequently described as a “Pandora for fine art.”

They are also a resource for art collecting and education. But it is so much more…what a resource!   They feature over 40,000 artists, they feature galleries from all over the world (over 600).  They have auctions of incredible works of art.  They are an incredible resource for art.  For instance if you want to know about Vincent Van Gogh, you can go to their page on Vincent Van Gogh where you can read his biography, look at his works of art (for instance I love Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”)

Artsy’s Van Gogh’s Sunflowers

But not only can you see this great masterpiece but you can also see it in the museum where it is on display (this great work is on display at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam-see it here.)

It is a great resource to keep up on the news in the art world.

On Artsy’s website you can learn all about Vincent Van Gogh…read articles about him and his works of art, learn of shows where his work is being shown and see related artists.  There is much to see on this website.

Artsy does not do this on just the classic artists but they do this on thousands of artists past and present!  You can easily discover new and upcoming artists!  AND if you are in the market they help you collect works of art…definitely spend some time exploring this website…

Total Eclipse of the Moon October 8

Total Eclipse of the Moon October 8

In the wee hours of the morning my husband woke me asking me if I wanted to see the eclipse of the moon?  Yes!…I jumped up and we ran outside.  We had to drive to a spot where the trees were not blocking the moon and we were rewarded with a glorious sight-one of nature’s rarest offerings when the moon enters the Earth’s dark shadow- an eclipse of the moon.  Using just my iPhone camera I captured the following images:

Winter Wonderland…Snow…Cold…Ice

February 5, 2014 by shelley

Winter storm, snow, ice and very cold temperatures.

Winter storm, snow, ice and very cold temperatures.

It looks like a winter wonderland outside.  We received 12 inches snow, extreme cold weather (wind chill 20 below).  It was a big daytime storm that hit our area yesterday and last evening.

Remembering JFK-personal memories…

November 22, 2013 by shelley

Fifty years ago today President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald.  I remember the moment the news broke… I was home from school that day (I missed a lot of school that year with repeated tonsillitis.  Later that year I would have my tonsils out.)  I was watching T.V.   A game show was on and they broke in on the T.V. show in the middle of a word with the news that President Kennedy had been shot.  I ran to the kitchen where my mother was and broke the news to her.  I felt important that I had such important news (and more importantly, I knew something before my mother-the reporter for the Deseret News Newspaper- knew the news and big news).  I remember the look on her face, it was one of disbelief…we remained glued to the TV waiting and waiting for more word about the President.  Then the word came that President Kennedy died.  Even at ten years old I recognized the magnitude of the news. My parents were somber, everyone, everywhere was so very somber.
We, along with everyone else, stayed glued to the T.V. for the following days; watching every event as it unfolded from Lee Harvey Oswald being shot by Jack Ruby, a new President being sworn in, Jackie in her blood stained pink Chanel suit, the President lying in state (watching Jackie and Caroline kneel at his casket), the military funeral possession,  John-John saluting his father’s casket,  the riderless horse with the boots turned backward,  the funeral, Arlington Cemetery, the Eternal Flame all events etched into my young memory.  The world changed for me…somehow I felt much older than ten years old.

It was America’s long vigil.  (This article appeared in TV Guide on Jan. 25, 1964.)
